Brief Description:

a)    About the Author

The story “Out of Business “is written by famous Indian writer ‘R.K.Narayan’ .The lesson is one of the stories from Malgudi Days written by him. Malgudi is a fictional fully urban town in southern India, conjured by Narayan. Narayan highlights the social context and everyday life of his characters in his stories. Narayan’s writing technique was unpretentious with a natural element of humour about it. It focused on ordinary people, reminding the reader of next-door neighbours, cousins and the like, thereby providing a greater ability to relate to the topic.

b)   About the Lesson:

This story is about a man named Rama Rao who used to sell gramophones but due to certain reasons had to suffer loss in the business. His downfall began, the servants were asked to leave the house and his kids were taken out of the reputed school and were admitted to free government school as he could not meet the expenses. Due to financial crisis he became sad and depressed. He switched over to solving crossword puzzles as an alternative to earn money and in doing so he overlooked his familial responsibility. This short cut of earning money proved disastrous and a failure hence out of depression decided to suicide .He lied down on the railway track for suicide, but God is merciful. The train got derailed and he was given another chance to lead his life with self respect. He was fortunate enough to undo his wrong doings and decided to go to Madras to begin his life again. Thus the story has a theme of struggle, dejection, self control, defeat, hope and utility.

II Objectives:

  • develop their basic skills of language viz., listening, speaking, reading and writing.
    • understand the plot and character of the story.
    • enjoy and appreciate the story and the use of language.
    • get familiar with the meaning of some unfamiliar words in the story.
    • become aware of the theme and emotions.
    • understand the importance of faith
    • believe that failures can not deter one’s faith in oneself
    • be optimistic and face the life challenges boldly.
    • understand suicide is no solution, it’s a cowardice.

b)- Behavioural Objectives

To enable the students to imbibe-

  • develop thought, critical analysis on the basis of the text read

  • Story prediction based on the title of the story (Guess the theme given in the story based on the title)
    • Discussion of stories of ‘Malgudi Days’ by R.K.Narayan.

  • What problems did the family face due to the financial crisis?
    • What is ‘The Captain’ in the story? How it distracted Rama Rao’s mind from his familial responsibilities?
