I and you all , who grew up learning English as a second language in our schools, I thought I’d share some of the best tips that helped me improve my grammar skills back in high school. Good grammar is so important these days—it can really help you succeed in school, get a good job, and communicate clearly with others.
Whether you’re studying for exams, writing papers, or just wanting to sound more fluent when speaking with friends, these quick and easy tips should give your English grammar a boost. Stick with them regularly and you’ll be amazed by the progress.
1. Focus on Irregular Verbs – Irregular verbs like “eat/ate/eaten” can be tricky to remember. I made flashcards with the verb on one side and its past/past participle forms on the back. Going over them daily really helped embed those verbs in my memory.
2. Identify Subject-Verb Agreement – Getting subjects and verbs to agree can be confusing. I came up with a silly rule of thumb: “The subject does the verbing.” So if the subject is singular like “he/she/it,” use a singular verb form. But if it’s plural like “they,” use a plural verb. And Remember SVO ( Subject Verb Object formula)
3. Learn Common Prefixes and Suffixes – Understanding word parts like “un-” and “-ly” can unlock the meaning of lots of new vocabulary. I challenged myself to learn one new prefix/suffix each week. Soon I could decode unfamiliar words on my own.
4. Read For enjoyment And Practice – Reading anything and everything I could get my hands on, from books to articles to signs on the street, helped my comprehension and exposed me to proper grammar usage. Bonus points if it’s something fun!
5. Review And Revise Own Writing – Look for errors after finishing assignments. Get feedback from friends or teachers too. With practice, I learned to self-edit more automatically.
6. Use Online Grammar Resources – Sites like Grammarly and World of English are full of helpful lessons and quizzes. I spent 30 minutes there a few times a week for extra practice. You can try Google games for English grammar too
7. Listen To News, Podcasts, Music – Hearing grammar in use helps reinforcement. I suggest the BBC for interesting current events with clear pronunciation.
8. Write Every Day – Spend 15 minutes journaling, make lists, or write letters. The more you write, the more natural correct grammar will feel.
9. Stay Positive And Have Patience – Learning grammar takes time. Don’t get discouraged! Celebrate small improvements rather than focus on flaws.
10. Use What You Learn – In conversations, try to incorporate new grammar rules and words you’ve studied.speaking is a great way to cement knowledge. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — that’s how we improve!
Hopefully some of these quick hits help boost your English grammar now or later in college apps and careers. Stick with a few tips regularly and you’ll see results fast. Let me know if any need more explanation or if you have additional questions! Wishing all students the best in their studies.
